Chinese Opera (also known as Wayang) was first introduced in Singapore by Chinese immigrants during the 19th century. Presented as a theatrical artform, Wayang provides dramatic entertainment by combining music, song, dance, speech and acrobatics, and were typically performed in theatres as well as during religious festivals and ceremonies. Today, Wayang has been identified as one of Singapore’s Intangible Cultural Heritage items that are currently practiced in multicultural Singapore.

Presented by Tok Tok Chiang Opera, ”One Step Closer to Wayang” is an interactive cultural showcase that seeks to preserve and reignite this traditional artform while simultaneously promoting greater awareness and appreciation of our diverse cultures, traditions and practices. The showcase will present a series of performances and activities relating to Chinese opera, including colourful costumes, the various collection of Chinese opera puppets, mask displays, and a photography showcase of the works by our local photographers as well as live Chinese opera performances by industry veterans as well as local artiste Nick Shen Weijun.

Activities are free unless otherwise stated.
