What were Lunar New Year celebrations like in the past? How have they evolved in Singapore over the years? What are your memories of Lunar New Year? Take a trip down memory lane at the River Hongbao 2018 exhibition “My Home, My New Year”, which traces the evolution of Lunar New Year celebrations in Singapore homes from the early years of nationhood to the present. The story is told through the perspective of a fictional character, and covers significant periods in Singapore history such as the early years of independence in the 1960s and 1970s, the years of rapid economic growth and urbanisation in the 1980s and 1990s, and as Singapore develops into a smart cosmopolitan city in the new millennium.

Curated by Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall together with students from Catholic High School and CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School, this exhibition shares the cherished memories of different generations of Singaporeans telling our Lunar New Year story through the use of objects, images, visuals and anecdotes. This exhibition aims to encourage visitors to appreciate Singapore’s unique customs and traditions in celebrating this major festival.
